We are blessed with Nature’s incomparable riches of fresh water to serve our 325
square mile area.
Ground Water
Far beneath the surface of the earth, water is stored in vast
natural basins. Four enormous basins capture Coachella Valley groundwater. They
continuously undergo the process of replenishment. Geologic barriers keep the
water contained within each basin.
The Whitewater River sub-basin, the largest of the four basins,
supplies most of our water.
Surface Water (from local mountains)
Mountain streams also bring us water by way of Chino Creek, Snow
Creek and Falls Creek. The amount varies from year to year with minimal flows
in dry years and heavy flows in very wet seasons.
Imported Water
Desert Water Agency along with Coachella Valley Water District, have contracts with the
State of California for water supply totaling approximately 187,100 acre-feet. This supply is used to recharge groundwater
basins within the Coachella Valley.
