California Water Property Tax Charges

You may have noticed a Desert Water Agency assessment on your property tax bill. The assessment is used to pay the Agency’s contract obligations to the State Water Project. According to the California Water Code, DWA has the right to tax property within the district boundaries for the contract obligation.

The board of directors must pass a resolution each year setting the cost of this tax. The board must certify to the Board of Supervisors that the rates are fixed and estimate the minimum amount of money required to be raised by taxation for the payment of debt and/or all other purposes for the Agency.

The monies collected through this assessment are used to pay the Agency’s obligation to the State Water Project which was approved by California voters in 1978.

As of 2012, the current tax rate is $0.10 per $100 of assessed valuation of taxable property.
